Storm-Damaged Roof in Melbourne? How to Handle the Insurance Claim
By the IronPeak Roofing team · 8 August 2026 · 7 min read
A big Melbourne storm can do in ten minutes what takes years of neglect — lift ridge caps, crack tiles, tear flashings and drive water into the ceiling. If it happens to you, the two things that decide how smoothly it gets fixed are how you respond in the first hour and how well you document the damage.
This is a plain-English guide to handling a storm-damaged roof and the insurance claim that usually follows. We are roofers, not insurers, so treat it as practical guidance and always check your own policy.
First: make it safe, not perfect
Your only job in the immediate aftermath is safety and containment. Stay off a wet or damaged roof — that is how serious injuries happen. Inside, move valuables and electronics out from under any leak, catch water in buckets, and switch off power to affected areas if water is near wiring or light fittings.
If the property is genuinely unsafe — a large section of roof gone, structural damage, or water near electrics — call the Victoria State Emergency Service (SES) on 132 500. For any life-threatening emergency, call 000.
Document everything before you touch it
Insurance claims are won and lost on evidence. Before any clean-up or temporary repair, capture the damage thoroughly:
- Photos and video of all damage — roof, ceilings, walls and contents — from several angles, ideally time-stamped.
- Wide shots that show the context and close-ups that show the detail.
- The date and rough time of the storm, and any weather warnings that were issued.
- A written list of damaged items and areas as you notice them — it is easy to forget things later.
- Receipts for any emergency make-safe work — most policies reimburse reasonable temporary repairs that prevent further damage.
Get an independent roofer’s report
You are entitled to your own assessment. An independent, itemised report from a professional roofer describes what failed, why it is storm damage rather than pre-existing wear, and what a proper repair involves. That is exactly the evidence an insurer’s assessor needs — and it stops the claim being quietly reduced to a cheap patch.
IronPeak provides photo-documented inspection reports for insurance purposes across Greater Melbourne. We carry $20 million public liability cover and put everything in writing.
Storm damage vs wear and tear — the line that matters
This is where most disputes happen. Insurers cover sudden, accidental storm damage; they do not cover gradual deterioration. A tile cracked by hail is a claim; mortar that crumbled over fifteen years is maintenance.
In reality, a storm often exposes a roof that was already tired. A good report separates the two honestly — what the storm did, and what was already due for restoration — so you know exactly what falls to insurance and what is worth doing yourself while the crew is already up there.
How the claim usually runs
Every insurer differs, but the shape of a claim is consistent:
- Lodge the claim promptly and give them your photos, your list and your roofer’s report.
- The insurer may send their own assessor; your independent report helps the two line up.
- Approved repairs are arranged either by the insurer’s panel or by your chosen roofer, depending on your policy.
- You typically pay your excess and the insurer covers the approved storm damage.
- Betterment: if old materials are replaced with new, some policies ask you to contribute the difference — ask about it up front.
A word on storm-chasers
After every big storm, out-of-area “roofers” door-knock the worst-hit streets offering today-only prices and quick cash jobs. Melbourne sees it every season. A legitimate roofer has an ABN you can look up, a real insurance certificate, a local base and a written warranty — and does not pressure you on the doorstep while you are stressed and dealing with damage.
Talk to a local roofer you can verify
If a storm has hit your roof anywhere across Greater Melbourne, we can inspect it, document it properly for your claim, and repair it once approved — from a local, accountable base, not an interstate hit-and-run. Call us and we will prioritise it.
